Despite playing numerous shows with bands I’ve seen multiple times over a span of many years, I somehow never saw Preacher Roe. I’m still baffled by this. Well, that’s all in the past. I finally got to take in a set from these no-frills rockers at Radio to kick off the month. Phew.
Sinnet – Year Of The Whale (2013)
Remember that Sinnet song I loved so much? “Year Of The Whale”? Well, it’s now available on vinyl! Yay! The B-side is “Searching For Spectors,” which continues the band’s ability to walk the tightrope stretched between natural feel and slick production. The harmony vocals really shine on this one. Oh, and the handclaps. Can’t forget the handclaps.
But wait, there’s more! The download that comes with this record is for a four song EP. In addition to the two songs on the vinyl, you get a couple of bonus tunes. The first, “Nitetime Creepy Crawlies,” is a real gem. It’s the poppiest number of the bunch. It wears that distinction with pride. “Everybody Into The Pool” brings back a haunting piano sound, like the one in “Year Of The Whale,” before launching into another quality indie rock number.
The grooves of this small-hole, 33 ⅓RPM 7″ are pressed into cool dark gray marble vinyl. The rest of the package is the tried-and-true white sleeve/fold over/vinyl bag combo.

Mellow Bravo – RiPPER (2013)

Mellow Bravo
RiPPER
2013
Oh, what’s this? Mellow Bravo have a new EP?* That’s nice. I’ll just download it and OH MY WHAT THE HOLY GEEZUMS HELL YES! THIS F’N RULES! Look, I love Mellow Bravo. Strut is a great party record with moments that hint at something more. Their self-titled album dug deep to show the world their guts. This one here, RiPPER, cuts through you like a chainsaw through brie. “Feel Like Dancin'” and “Party” are both destined to be perennial set openers. “So Pretty” is right there with the riffs, too. Mellow Bravo close out the EP with the devastating “Low Ain’t The Bottom.” They back off the gas a bit to deliver the knockout blow. RiPPER just became my favorite Mellow Bravo release. JUST GET THIS, OK?
Where to get it:
* Yes, I know it’s not brand-spankin’ new anymore. I’ve been too busy listening to this thing to write about it, OK? Back off.
Reverse @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 10.18.2013
Hmmm… how do we end The Daykamp Poster & Photo Show? There have been so many great bands playing some of their best sets over the two nights. What band can take the stage after all of that and deliver a performance that will put the proper exclamation point on the whole crazy event? What band is that good? Oh, right, Reverse…
Sidewalk Driver @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 10.18.2013
Sidewalk Driver played The Daykamp Poster & Photo Show. I was smiling so much I’m surprised I wasn’t pulling confetti out of my teeth for days. I LOVE THIS BAND.
Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 10.18.2013
Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance blow my mind every time they take the stage. Their presence at The Daykamp Poster & Photo Show was no exception. Their sound bends the space–time continuum as much as it blends genres. They are diametrically opposed to themselves. Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance are the tranquil freak-out.
Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 10.18.2013
Whoa. That was one of the best Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling sets I’ve ever seen. The duo laid waste to their originals. They tore through a cover of Eldridge Rodriguez’s “Run MF Run.” Intense. The Daykamp Poster & Photo Show just got a kick in the pants.
Daykamp Music’s Ghosts of Halloween Past
In Boston, we love Halloween shows almost as much as we love the Red Sox winning the World Series. Let’s play dress up and revisit some of my favorite Halloween sets from the past couple of years…

I saw Bikini Whale at Radio in October of 2011. In December of that year, I saw The B-52s at House Of Blues. Bikini Whale was better.

OK, they played “Beverly Hills,” but I won’t hold it against them because the rest of the set was soooo good. The Field Effect as Weezer was a natural fit.

The Lights Out did a Queen set at Church last year. Are you kidding me?

Sidewalk Driver as Spinal Tap. It wasn’t the first time they’d done this set, but it was a first for me. So good.

Gondoliers performed a Mötley Crüe set back in 2011. It was art.

There was some serious channeling going on when I, Pistol covered Nirvana at Church.

Last Halloween I went to see Walter Sickert And The Army of Broken Toys and Darling Pet Munkee at Brighton Music Hall. Every day is Halloween with those bands…
Happy Halloween. Be safe.
Scamper(ish) @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 10.18.2013
Remember that time we asked the guys from Scamper if they wanted to reunite for Night #2 of The Daykamp Poster & Photo Show? That was a good idea. ¾ of the band* played a semi-acoustic set of Scamper hits to get things going. They also threw in a Nada Surf cover, because yes.
* Keith couldn’t make it, but we missed him terribly.
The Susan Constant @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 10.10.2013
The Susan Constant closed out Night #1 of The Daykamp Poster & Photo Show. This band is all heart. Oh, and songs. Heart and songs. This band is all heart and songs.
