Goddamn Glenn & The Parlour Bells Players @ Radio 11.27.2012

Parlour Bells are a natural fit for a lounge themed show. They’ve always had a swanky vibe. Reborn as Goddamn Glenn & The Parlour Bells Players, the band passionately embraced Anngelle Wood’s Lounge Act show at Radio. They stripped back the songs and rebuilt them with a red velvet touch. Magen Tracy and Nate Leavitt stepped out and nailed the noir-tinged sound while Brendan Boogie and Paul Myers kept things buttoned down behind them. Frequent Parlour Bells collaborator Joel Edinberg added some drama on the sax. The mood was set for Goddamn Glenn to do his thing. This may have been the finest performance of Glenn DiBenedetto’s career. He crooned. He swooned. He sat down with the ladies. It was a great reminder that even high expectations can be exceeded when you take the time to mix a mid-song martini.

Orbit @ Paradise Rock Club 6.30.2012

Throughout Orbit’s set at We Want The Airwaves: A WFNX Tribute there was an enthusiastic gentleman shouting praise at the band. While his language was rather colorful, I agreed with the general sentiment: Orbit was great. The band complimented their own classic originals (including “Medicine” and “Bicycle Song”) with a cover of The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” that played well to a crowd basking in ‘FNX nostalgia.

Parlour Bells @ Paradise Rock Club 6.30.2012

On Friday I told you why Parlour Bells was a great choice to kick off the We Want The Airwaves: A WFNX Tribute event at The Paradise. On Saturday they proved me right. This crowd wasn’t going to settle for melancholy and self-pity. They wanted a reason to be hopeful. They wanted to be delighted. They wanted to be entertained. They wanted all of this. Parlour Bells delivered.

Parlour Bells – “Airwaves” (2012)

Parlour Bells
“Airwaves”
2012

There’s a big show at The Paradise on Saturday night. Some former WFNX DJs are putting together an event to celebrate the WFNX that was.* Parlour Bells are on the bill for good reason. They are a band that has always championed radio as being essential to the local music scene, even in a time of readily available digital downloads and internet streaming. They are tireless supporters of Boston Emissions, Boston Accents and any other radio program devoting time to playing Boston artists. They even performed on the resurrected WBCN rock bus. I believe Glenn DiBenedetto when he sings “now my radio dial is missing two front teeth.” He means it.

“Airwaves” is a sentimental reflection on the state of Boston radio in June of 2012. It strikes a chord by revealing the emotion of a specific time and place. “Airwaves” is a song about how fans of Boston radio feel right now. It’s immediate. You can’t listen to Nate Leavitt’s delay drenched guitars and not be reminded of the countless U2 radio anthems broadcast by both of our recently departed rock radio stations. It’s a consoling echo. I’d be lying if I said the song wasn’t playing in my head last night as I lay in bed. The sound of the Metropolitan Chorale** was ringing in my ears as prepared for a new day.

Where to get it:

You can also watch a mini-documentary on the making of “Airwaves” right here.

* See what I did with the link there? Garvy J And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance are part of the show, too.

** Kerri-Ann Richard, Richard Bouchard, Anngelle Wood, Michael Marotta, Chris Mulvey, Lisa Libera, Leesa Coyne, Adam Ritchie, Rishava Green, Matt King, Michael J. Epstein, Sophia Cacciola, Jessica Sun Lee, Adam Anderson, Michael Gonzales, Ken Marcou, Tom Roppelt, Joel Edinberg, Rachel Blumenthal, Sarah Rabdau, Peter Moore and Dan Nicklin all lend their voices to the song.

The Complete 2012 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble Roundup

The Rumble is one big rock 'n' roll party.

The 2012 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble is in the books. In the end, Bow Thayer And Perfect Trainwreck were the last ones standing. Congratulations to those guys on a hard fought victory! It was no easy task. There were a ton of great sets during this year’s proceedings. Those that look at The Rumble as more of a festival than a competition have the right idea. It’s a phenomenal way to check out a bunch of local bands at the top of their game. Thanks to all of the bands for nine great nights of rock.

If you see this woman, thank her for being awesome.

Selecting those bands is no easy task. Anngelle Wood has had that responsibility for the past few years now. She’s done a wonderful job. Under her guidance, The Rumble has a renewed spirit of camaraderie. A rising tide lifts all boats and all that jazz. She also takes care of the behind the scenes stuff that needs to happen (prizes, sponsors, being a class act and having The Grownup Noise as the guest band, press and the like). It’s daunting task. I’d say it’s thankless, but a quick look at Facebook reveals quite a few deserving statements of gratitude heading her way. There should be more. I hope Anngelle and her crew (including Richard Bouchard of Boston Band Crush, Kerri-Ann Richard and John Robinson) realize how much fun The Rumble is for us local music fans. I’d like to personally thank Anngelle for having me on board as a photographer this year. It was exhausting, but such a blast.

Lastly, thanks to everyone who has checked out the site the past few weeks. I hope I was able to capture a few memorable Rumble moments. I leave you with photos and recaps of all 35 sets by the 24 bands that participated in this year’s event…

The Grownup Noise @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.20.2012

The band that was supposed to play first in the 2012 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble has just played last. In a classy move by Anngelle Wood,* The Grownup Noise closed out this year’s festivities as the non-competing guest band. The eclectic indie rock outfit was supposed to open Preliminary Night #1 before Paul Hansen slipped a disc in his back a couple of days before the show, forcing the band to reluctantly withdraw. Thankfully, he’s feeling much better now. The band took to the TT’s stage and played a great set to wrap things up. What a fitting end to a wonderful three week run.

* Anngelle is full of classy moves when it come to The Rumble.

Bow Thayer And Perfect Trainwreck @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.20.2012

Bow Thayer And Perfect Trainwreck’s modern Americana took the 2012 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble tiara* on Friday night. It was certainly no easy task. The band faced tough competition on all of their nights. Through it all they won over judges with well crafted songs and an astonishing display of musicianship, both individually and collectively. Swampy, dirty, twangy and heartfelt, these guys can flat out play.

Congratulations to Bow Thayer And Perfect Trainwreck!

* In reality the Rumble tiara is more of an actual crown now.

Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.20.2012

Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance’s 2012 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble run was dazzling. Dueling EBows, distorted twelve-strings, a massive rhythm section, psych-tinged tunes and a smooth vocal croon all sparkled under the TT’s lights. It was simultaneously joyous, achingly gorgeous and slightly mind bending. Spectacular.

Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.13.2012

Anngelle Wood is introducing the band, but I’m not really paying attention.* Behind her, Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance are already stealing the show. Once they have the stage to themselves there will be no stopping them. Garvy J. is in full command of the situation, manipulating the crowd with guitar swells, a cool confidence and sonic bombast.

Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance take Rumble Semifinal #2.

* During their preliminary round set, Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance launched into their set before Anngelle could introduce them.
