The Rudds’ rockin’ power pop closed out the first night of the Abbey Lounge Reunion at Sally O’Brien’s. Oh, and bubbles!
Jenny Dee’s All-Star Jam @ Lizard Lounge 11.7.2014
How do you cap off a night that celebrated the release of new albums from Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents and Township? With an All-Star jam, of course…
Township @ Lizard Lounge 11.7.2014
Township. Man, oh, man. It ain’t gimmick, mimic, tribute or homage. It’s just the sound of five guys plugging in and riffing away. They released their new album at The Lizard and I can’t stop listening to it. That’s OK. Let it roll.
The Dents @ Radio 10.12.2012
The Dents were the final act of the Bands For Babs benefit. They closed out the event with a snappy set that went over big with the Radio crowd.
The Dents @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 11.18.2011
The Dents have reunited for one night of pissed off songs about ex-boyfriends. It’s well worn territory, but the masses huddled in front of the TT’s stage are getting exactly what they want. I lose count of how many times someone yells “Don’t they sound great!?!” into my ear during the set.* It would be safe to say that those who have patiently waited years for this moment will not leave disappointed.
* This happens quite a bit after the set as well, people raising their voices to hear themselves over the ringing in their ears. Don’t forget your earplugs, folks.
John Powhida International Airport @ Radio 10.7.2011
John Powhida International Airport closed out opening night at Radio. J-Po brought along an entirely different flight crew since the last time I saw him.* One thing remains constant**; you can’t swing a funny bunny on stage at a JPX show without hitting a talented musician.
Also worth noting: Radio is awesome! Congrats to everyone who helped get the place off the ground (including owners Aimee McGrath and Josh Banville and booking agent Ashley Willard).
* Come to think of it, both Rudds shows I’ve seen this year had entirely different line-ups.
** You know, besides Mr. Powhida himself. So I guess two things. Oh, and the songs. Three things. Everything else changed, though. I think. I’m not so sure anymore.
Andrea Gillis Band @ Brighton Music Hall 10.1.2011
Fit To Be Tied @ The Rosebud Bar 9.23.2011
Fit To Be Tied closed out the fantastic Joan Jett tribute night at The Rosebud with a set that included two Barbusters songs from Light Of Day.* I went into the night expecting Tom Baker and gang to play the title track (Mr. Baker’s regular outfit, The Dirty Truckers, covered this song at a Springsteen tribute show last year), but “This Means War” was a real treat. Close out the night with an drunken all-hands-on-deck version of “I Love Rock N’ Roll” and I’d say Nicole Tammaro did a bang up job putting this show together.
* Unfortunately, no one covered The Hunzz classic “Rabbit’s Got The Gun”. New mission for me: Orchestrate a Fit To Be Tied reunion just so I can convince them to play that song.
The Other Girls @ The Rosebud Bar 9.23.2011
These are The Other Girls.
Andrea Gillis, Michelle Paulhus, Amy Griffin, Linda Shore and Melissa Gibbs have all made their mark on the Boston music scene. They’ve played in some of the best original bands in town. Every once in a while they get together to play some cool covers. For this show, they got together to play some really cool Joan Jett covers. It was, after all, a tribute to Joan Jett on her birthday… er, the day after her birthday… uh…
You know what? You shouldn’t need a special occasion to play Joan Jett covers. Hell, half the songs she did were covers. Joan Jett rules. Kudos to Nicole Tammaro for recognizing this and putting a show together in her honor.
