Goddamn Glenn & The Parlour Bells Players @ Radio 11.27.2012

Parlour Bells are a natural fit for a lounge themed show. They’ve always had a swanky vibe. Reborn as Goddamn Glenn & The Parlour Bells Players, the band passionately embraced Anngelle Wood’s Lounge Act show at Radio. They stripped back the songs and rebuilt them with a red velvet touch. Magen Tracy and Nate Leavitt stepped out and nailed the noir-tinged sound while Brendan Boogie and Paul Myers kept things buttoned down behind them. Frequent Parlour Bells collaborator Joel Edinberg added some drama on the sax. The mood was set for Goddamn Glenn to do his thing. This may have been the finest performance of Glenn DiBenedetto’s career. He crooned. He swooned. He sat down with the ladies. It was a great reminder that even high expectations can be exceeded when you take the time to mix a mid-song martini.

The Globe Bar is open.

Ruby Rose Fox @ Radio 11.27.2012

Lounge Act was a swanky night that Anngelle Wood put together at Radio. Ruby Rose Fox got the evening started amid red curtains and candlelit tables. Her voice wove through reworked originals and well chosen covers to set the mood. Listening to Ruby sing “Watching The Detectives” was worth the price of admission. Mesmerizing.

The Field Effect @ Radio 11.16.2012

We should all be lucky enough to approach one aspect of our lives with as much enthusiasm as The Field Effect have for playing their songs* for people.

* And the occasional Weezer cover. They reprised “My Name Is Jonas” from their Halloween set for this show.

The Rationales @ Radio 11.16.2012

This was the first Boston area show for The Rationales with Chad Raleigh on guitar. Based on the string of rippin’ guitar lines he unleashed at Radio, I think things are going to work out just fine.

Velah @ Radio 11.16.2012

Velah’s siren songs are calling under the dim red lights at Radio. You’re taken in by their enchanting melodies and rhythmic patterns before the churning guitars envelop you. Velah have the sea at their command. You are immersed.

The Russians @ Precinct 11.16.2012

It was early in the night when The Russians rolled into Precinct as part of the International Pop Overthrow. The crowd surrendered unconditionally.

Fuzzy @ Midway Cafe 11.9.2012

When I got home from seeing Fuzzy at the Midway, I went straight to Facebook* to rave about the band. Long Fuzziless stretches will do that to you. These are some of the finest indie-rock/power-pop/whatever-you-want-to-call-them tunes you’ll ever hear. Fuzzy are one of my favorites. To see the lineup of Chris Toppin, Hilken Mancini, Winston Braman and David Ryan sharing the stage for the first time in some 15 odd years was a little magical. I wish every day was Chris Toppin’s birthday so this would happen again and again and again.

* Hey! Did you know Daykamp Music has a Facebook page? It’s right here, in case you missed it up top there. Why not give it a little love.

Buffalo Tom @ Midway Cafe 11.9.2012

When you think of Boston bands that consistently write great songs, Buffalo Tom should be in your head. It’s no wonder Chris Toppin had a hard time paring down her wishlist for the band’s set at her birthday bash. Buffalo Tom played through a bunch of those request in front of an appreciative full house at the Midway. They even had a little help from their friends.

Tanya Donelly @ Midway Cafe 11.9.2012

Tanya Donelly backed by Buffalo Tom at the Midway? I never thought I’d see this. I’m not going to think about this one too much. It’s a special occasion. Special things happen. I’m just going to enjoy hearing some of my favorite Tanya-penned tunes* (along with a cool cover of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”) and count my blessings. It is almost Thanksgiving, after all.

* “Slow Dog” anyone? So good.
