Riding high on the release of their latest single, The Deep North brought their ardent indie rock to an appreciative crowd at The Middle East Downstairs.
I had been looking forward to this one for a while. Velah, The Deep North, The Susan Constant and The Field Effect together at The Middle East Downstairs? That’s a pretty darn good bill. Velah got things going with songs old, new and re-imagined. I think their delay drenched crescendos are still reverberating through the former bowling alley.
Every Emily Peal And The Band Of Skinny Men performance is like a master course in dynamics. I can’t think of a band in town that has more control over their musical bombast than this cast of characters. They can smolder and they can flare. It’s not uncommon for an all-consuming hush to be followed by a blinding shower of audible sparks. Pay attention. You won’t want to miss this.
Well, isn’t this a nice surprise. I knew nothing of Badknight when I got to TT’s tonight, but I’m watching them now and I’m enthralled. The combination of finger-picked guitar, jazz inflected vocals and just-right upright is enchanting. I’ll be leaving with a copy of their freshly pressed vinyl.
Licious set a mood with a collection of mellow, entrancing songs that captivated the crowd gathering in front of the TT’s stage.
