Boston Rock Photos And Stuff
Replacement Friends got an enthusiastic response from the Middle East crowd to kick off a night of big rock in the upstairs room.
Watts
“Flash Of White Light” b/w “The Mess Is The Makeup”
2014
I had this 7″ ordered as soon as I heard about it. Why not? With Watts, you know you’re gonna get some fine rock ‘n’ roll. That’s exactly what this release is. “Flash Of White Light” is instantly recognizable from their live shows and it rips with blazing guitars and a flash of… wait a sec. I got a little wrapped up in the tune there. How can you not like a song that name drops The Dirty Truckers, The Shods, The Dents and The Abbey Lounge? So good. “The Mess Is The Makeup” follows up with harmonies and handclaps. I’m a sucker for handclaps. Have I mentioned that Watts are good at the whole rock ‘n’ roll thing?
As for the vinyl itself? It’s white, obviously. Small hole. 45RPM. Full color jacket. Good stuff.
Where to get it:
Tim Gearan’s Friday night residency at Atwood’s rolled on. I think he’s onto something…
I will listen in a car.
I will listen in a bar.
I will go to Atwood’s Tavern
I will go where’er they have ’em.
I will watch them here or there.
I will watch them anywhere.
I do so like Airport the band.
I do so like them, music fan.
Spirit Kid
“Severance”
2014
Emeen Zarookian is moving to LA. Before we get all bummed out that there won’t be regular Spirit Kid shows around these part, check out this parting single he’s leaving us with. Like all Spirit Kid tunes, it’s likely to be the catchiest, most joy-inducing audio romp you hear all day. Fuzzed-out guitars, kaleidoscope organ and sped-up tape effects all put a smile on my face, but in the end it’s Emeen’s knack with a hook that makes this one timeless. We’re gonna miss him.
Oh, there’s a cool video for the song, too.
Where to get it:
Fuzzstival closed with The New Highway Hymnal’s primal set reverberating through The Middle East Downstairs.
Spacey sonic bombast. Ghost Box Orchestra brought a big sound to Fuzzstival.
Striking the perfect balance of timeless pop songcraft and psychedelic experimentation, Doug Tuttle and his band floored the Fuzzstival crowd at The Middle East Downstairs.
Fat Creeps bent genres and hypnotized with harmonies at Fuzzstival.
The Fagettes might be the most rock ‘n’ roll band in town. Nothing was going to stop them from raising a ruckus at Fuzzstival. Killer.
