These Wild Plains – These Wild Plains (2015)

These Wild Plains have packaged up their Evils and “Break Your Heart” EPs (along with the previously-unheralded-on-these-pages-but-equally-as awesome Hey, To Clear The Air EP) into an easy to consume self-titled collection. Now you can get lost in all of their warm, haunting, heart-breaking, fuzzy, twangy, reverb-drenched songs without interruption. Although, I’d gladly get up to flip over the record if they pressed this thing on vinyl.

These Wild Plains have just released a new single. “Break Your Heart” glows with a warmth that could comfort the coldest soul. Delicately layered guitars and a lilting melody ride atop a fluttering beat. The song draws you in even as you’re being pushed away. Welcome home.

The band also revisits “Waves” and “Plains,” the songs that first had These Wild Plains haunting my dreams.

These Wild Plains have come to haunt the summer winds with Evils. There’s a shimmer to these tunes. The melodies flirt with optimism, but the songs themselves are about reality. In the real world, sunshine eventually gives way to clouds. We’re left with three songs that paint in never-ending shades of gray, where contrast and texture control the mood. These are black and white snapshots of the dog days. Revel in the twang, bends and warm fuzz of These Wild Plains while you can. The bright colors of autumn will be here before you know it.

There’s something haunting about These Wild Plains. There’s a sense of foreboding that hangs over everything they do. The landscape is stark. The tension is palpable. This is mood music, and it’s killer. “Waves” is drenched in tremolo and reverb. “Plains” is drawn with interwoven guitars and unison vocals. Both songs are music cinema. We’re left with the lingering “Virginia” and a feeling that These Wild Plains are doing something special.
