Snow. Let’s get that out of the way. A nasty little storm blew in at the worst possible time. That couldn’t stop Indie Rock Ranger’s Holiday Spectacular, though! The show plowed ahead^* with Harris Hawk rattling the metal in the mouths of the intrepid concert-goers gathering at The Middle East Downstairs for a remarkable night of music.

^* Did I really just type that? Oof. I blame sleep deprivation from a long weekend at The Sinclair. More on that later.

I had been looking forward to this one for a while. Velah, The Deep North, The Susan Constant and The Field Effect together at The Middle East Downstairs? That’s a pretty darn good bill. Velah got things going with songs old, new and re-imagined. I think their delay drenched crescendos are still reverberating through the former bowling alley.

OK, let’s get something clear. Not only am I a huge fan of the music we’ve got coming out of Boston, but I’m a junkie for high octane rock ‘n’ roll from Sweden. As soon as I heard about the Imperial State Electric show at The Middle East, I freaked out and frantically snatched up tickets. Not only would I get to see a band I never thought I’d get the chance to see live^*, but there were three Boston openers ready to give ’em a run for their money.

White Dynomite got things started on a night that would be full-tilt from start to finish. These guys are too much fun.

^* Oh, and they were amazing.

It can be tough having a late slot on a school night. You have to dig a little deeper to keep yourself going. It ain’t glamorous loading out late and getting up early. Some bands can’t cut it. They pack up and go home. Other bands put on their shiny jackets and step onto that stage like there’s no place else they’d rather be.
