I do so enjoy the music of Dave Mirabella. He can do a full on rock show with The Rationales or play solo with his acoustic guitar and I will be happy. This past Friday night at Radio was the latter. I had missed a chance to see him play earlier in the week. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake again.
Gozu @ Radio 5.3.2013
Gozu just released The Fury Of A Patient Man. The band took over Radio for a whole weekend to properly introduce it to the world. These guys are really good.
Guilty Party @ Moe’s Lounge 5.3.2013
While there was a quick break in the action upstairs at the Gozu show, I bopped down to Moe’s to see what was going on. Guilty Party was rocking Freak Flag First Friday. Nice.
Mellow Bravo @ Radio 5.3.2013
My life would be less good without Mellow Bravo. It’s just that simple.
Birch Hill Dam @ Radio 5.3.2013
The guys from Birch Hill Dam opened up the first night of Gozu’s Radio takeover weekend. These guys are straight-up heavy rock. They covered Skid Row’s “Slave To The Grind.” Sometimes a hammer is the right tool for the job.
Roy Sludge Trio @ Radio 4.28.2013
Sunday was a good day. After bumming around Boston all day with the family, Big Little One and I headed over to Radio to catch some of Roy Sludge’s set. Little did we know we were stepping into Electric Sludgeland. Roy was on electric guitar* and Judd Williams joined on drums. Jim Haggerty even set down his upright in favor of a bass guitar on a few numbers. Pretty cool. This day was full of welcome surprises.
* Very ably, mind you, despite numerous references to “meat hooks.”
Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance @ Radio 3.7.2013
I’m at a loss. I want you to know how I feel when I watch Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance, but the words aren’t coming. “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture” and all that. Imagine standing in the sunshine with all the dark clouds held at bay. What do you call that feeling?
Shoney Lamar & The Equal Rights @ Radio 3.7.2013
Whoa. This isn’t rock music; this is beat poetry set to manic outbursts of distorted disobedience. Shoney Lamar & The Equal Rights just floored me.
Brendan Boogie & The Broken Gates @ Radio 3.7.2013
You know what I always say: “When it snows, I need to boogie!”* Well, it’s snowing, so I’m off to Radio for Brendan Boogie’s first-Thursday-of-every-month-until-the-end-of-time residency. The band is good great. The puns are bad terrible. It’s exactly what I had hoped for.
* I never have and never will say this. Never ever ever ever ever ever ever. Ever. Never.
