Parlour Bells @ Radio 1.28.2012

It’s Groundhog Day and I feel like I’ve written this post before. You know, the one where I tell you I that think Parlour Bells are pretty great.

Somehow my previous posts singing the band’s praises don’t adequately describe just how good this outfit is getting. Their set at Radio for the Winter Rock Formal was incredible. It was at times dramatic, joyous, haunting and seductive. I wouldn’t mind reliving this one over and over again.

Eddie Japan @ Radio 1.28.2012

Eddie Japan is probably my favorite band to feature a trumpet.

I don’t mean that as some kind of backhanded compliment. This is a full-on compliment punch. The trumpet is never an afterthought. It never feels tacked on. Eddie Japan have managed to take a decidedly non-rock instrument and weave it into the very texture of their sound. It doesn’t define their sound, but rather compliments it. It’s not an easy thing to do. Eddie Japan do it well. The whole band is aces and plays to the song. Well done, gentlemen.

Broken Wings @ Radio 1.28.2012

Broken Wings wrote all of the big hits of the ’80s. I just never realized it. Funny how that happens…

Wait. Something’s not right. Maybe this is all an elaborate hoax. Those accents don’t seem entirely authentic. Hmmm. Either way, it’s good fun.

Cocked N’ Loaded @ Radio 1.20.2012

A few moments into Cocked N’ Loaded’s set, Andrew Doherty of Motherboar unloaded a can of beer in Kyle Neeson’s face. He must have made contact, because Kyle wound up with a bloody mouth. No matter. This is Cocked N’ Loaded, after all.

Motherboar @ Radio 1.20.2012

Motherboar brought the heavy. That’s what they do.

Aquanutz @ Moe’s Lounge 1.20.2012

I pretty much knew I was going to like Aquanutz. I grew up on hair metal, so this was right up my alley. I expected the Poison and Cinderella covers. I would have been happy to leave it at that. I got so much more.

When Aquanutz opened with “Slide It In”, I knew this show was going to exceed my already high expectations. When they covered “Blind In Texas” a couple of songs later I was all-in. I mean, who covers W.A.S.P. in 2012? Awesome bands do. Aquantuz does.

Rule @ Radio 1.20.2012

Growing up we had a cat. When we got him, he was a tiny little kitten. My mom named him Pudge. He pretty quickly grew into his name.

Pretty much the same thing is happening with Rule.*

* Living up to their name, that is. Not getting pudgy.

The Shakes & Pony Show @ Moe’s Lounge 1.20.2012

Thank goodness this is the final night of The Shakes & Pony Show residency at Moe’s Lounge. I’m getting tired of Rod and Jason’s mind games. I’ve been to all three shows and I still can’t figure out what the hell a Shakes & Pony Show is. Sometimes it’s a crazy mix of cover tunes. That was fun. Sometimes it’s Brownboot. That was fun, too. Tonight it’s Rod and Jason playing some ’80s power ballads. That was… oh, I get it now.

Convulsions @ Radio 1.20.2012

The “Born Of Fire” metal series came across the river! They set up shop at Radio and brought Rhode Island’s Convulsions along to get things going. The band had some cool transitions to break up their aural assault.
