Ladies and gentlemen, hold onto your riff hats. Devil On Horseback are coming for ’em. These guys made some kind of deal with the man down below a while ago and now they’re cashing in. Is it metal? I don’t know, but Priest and Jake E. Lee are certainly in the mix. Hell, the bridge from “Blowfly” sounds like Ride The Lightning-era Metallica. So, yeah, at least metal-ish. Eric Waxwood and Alejandro Necochea rip up their fretboards while Dave Riley keeps the low end in check. Then there are the drums. I’ve been a huge fan of Bruce Caporal for years, but I’ve never heard him play like this. I’m floored. This rules.

Where to get it:

Being for the Benefit of Barbara Walsh!

This is tough to write…

I’m going to get right to it. On July 3rd, our dear friend Barbara “Babs” Walsh suffered an AVM/stroke. She went into a coma. The news was brutal. Babs is one of my favorite people in the entire world. Anyone who knows Barbara understands what a big supporter she is of the Boston music scene. Any band that has endured her brutal honesty is better for it.* Even moving to L.A. several months ago didn’t slow her down. She had already been back this way a couple of times, attending shows and catching up with all of us who miss her. Suddenly, she was fighting for her life. Devastating.

This is easy to write…

You know what? Babs is a tough cookie. Her recovery, thus far, has been tremendous. Now we’re putting on a show with a bunch of her friends to help with the financial side of things. What kind of show? How about a two night blowout at Radio! Bands For Babs! Upstairs! Downstairs! Rock! Punk! Metal! Reunions! We’ve got it all in store for you. The show details and Facebook events are listed below. We hope you can make it out to our good ol’ fashioned rock ‘n’ roll extravaganza and help get Babs get back on her feet.

There’s also a website for donations: Funds For Babs

Both shows are at Radio.

* Barbara has been particulary vocal about her distaste for the Dirt Mall song “The Demons & The Damned.” It’s already a long song, but I’m thinking we may bust out an extended version for this occasion. Just for you, Babs!

Devil On Horseback @ Great Scott 6.2.2012

Devil On Horseback released a new 7″ at Great Scott with a set of space-fuzz-infused-riff-heavy-buzz-o-matic rock ‘n’ roll. Yeah, that sounds about right.

The tags for this song on the Devil On Horseback Bandcamp page are “rock” and “Boston”. That’s as much a directive as it is a description. For 2 minutes and 41 seconds, that’s exactly what they do.

Fuzzed-out indie rock riffs mesh seamlessly with Bruce Caporal’s syncopated beat. Eric Waxwood’s vocals supply the commands. Take a shot. The guitars get a little extra juice right before the short-and-to-the-point classic rock solo. These guys are an efficient machine. Devil On Horseback are on a mission. Rock Boston.

Where to get it:

Devil On Horseback @ Radio 12.17.2011

I can only assume that someone will be by shortly to take names. Asses were certainly kicked. Devil On Horseback fired off riff after riff into the Radio crowd. These guys are good.

Devil On Horseback @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 11.18.2011

This is my first time seeing Devil On Horseback since they were reborn from the ghost of Auto Interiors. Despite the band member carryover, it truly does sound like a new band. These guys know they have a good slot on a great bill and are making the most of it, winning over a significant portion of the growing crowd along the way.

I run into singer/guitarist Eric Waxwood at Radio the next night (more on that show later) and tell him how impressed I am with their transformation. He notes that even though they’ve played a few shows under the new name, Friday night at TT’s was the first time it truly felt like a Devil On Horseback show.

Metamorphosis complete.
