Oh! Hello, Velah. So happy to have you back. What with your waves of delay and enchanting melodies, you were truly missed.
I had been looking forward to this one for a while. Velah, The Deep North, The Susan Constant and The Field Effect together at The Middle East Downstairs? That’s a pretty darn good bill. Velah got things going with songs old, new and re-imagined. I think their delay drenched crescendos are still reverberating through the former bowling alley.
Velah closed out the first night of this year’s Rumble. I continue to be impressed with their high-wire act. Somehow they remain on the tightrope, balanced between the atmospheric and the immediate. They’ve got the songs. They’ve got the sound. Impressive stuff.

Velah’s siren songs are calling under the dim red lights at Radio. You’re taken in by their enchanting melodies and rhythmic patterns before the churning guitars envelop you. Velah have the sea at their command. You are immersed.
While some bands take years to settle into their sound, Velah seem to have emerged with a fully formed musical identity. Will they evolve over time? That’s an exciting inevitability for a unit that is so in tune with each other.

We saw John Brookhouse, Chrissy Vaccaro, Danny McNair, T.J.Horn and Mary Flatley circling the wagons. They were tight. They were aggressive. They covered The Misfits (sort of). They took no prisoners. To top it all off, John Brookhouse let loose with an absolutely jaw dropping solo on their final song. No one was left standing. Wagon Battle killed.
The Acre lit up The Rosebud Bar.
