The Pipeline! at 25 celebration found 1981 Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble winners Someone And The Somebodies at Cuisune en Local for a set that harked back to the early days of modern rock.
I didn’t remember Pods. In fact, I’m not sure I had ever heard of them before the Pipeline! at 25 shows were announced. Now I feel silly. Pods played some punchy, punky power pop at Cuisine en Locale that made me wonder how I had missed them during their first go-round. Outstanding.
The Pipeline! at 25 celebration brought Purple Ivy Shadows to Cuisine en Locale for a set of dreamy indie rock.
Mistle Thrush were dynamic, textured and slightly haunting at at Cuisine en Locale for the Pipeline! at 25 celebration. Just like I remember them.

It would be hard for me to overstate how important Ultrabreakfast has been to my time in the Boston music scene. Their indie rock, janglefuzz tunes brought me out to the clubs. They taught me who Billy Ruane was. “Gonna go out tonight/Gonna get my hand stamped twice” became words to live by. Friendships and bands formed with and around this crew have impacted just about every aspect of my life. Needless to say, when Ultrabreakfast got together to play their first show in 15 years as part of WMBR’s Pipeline! at 25 celebration, I was there.

Coming on like a modern, dark, new wave band with a penchant for late-’90s-Radiohead-inspired outros, This Blue Heaven are back with another impressive single. “Wave” builds in a steady and sturdy way. The poised vocal dodges the sharp-edged textures. The sound is confident and controlled, with just enough tumult to make its mark. This is good.

Township are from another time. They may be from the past. They may be from the future. I’m not entirely sure. What I am sure of is that the slabs of riffage and rhyme they were laying down at Redstar Union last week made for one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. Good golly.
After a summer hiatus, The Singhs were back at Redstar Union for the return of their monthly The Singhs & Friends series. The band didn’t miss a beat, effortlessly presenting one polished pop number after the next.
Intensity and atmosphere. Doom Lover hit on both points. Add a healthy dose of harmonies and dynamics and you’ve pulled me in.
