Roy Sludge Trio @ Lexington Battle Green BBQ Festival 5.16.2015

There was a lot going on this past weekend. I had dreams of catching a whole bunch of bands at HarpoonFest. I hoped to wander the streets of Somerville taking in the sounds of Porchfest. Neither one panned out. Thankfully, I did make it out to the Lexington Battle Green BBQ Festival to see Roy Sludge. At least I picked a good one. Roy Sludge is a national treasure.

Also, one of these photos was taken by a six year old. I’m not sayin’ which one.

The Daily Pravda – “1999” (2015)

“1999” sparkles with The Daily Pravda’s if-it’s-British-and-has-a-flair-for-the-dramatic-we-don’t-care-what-year-it’s-from-we’re-inspired-by-it sound. Bowie? The Psychedelic Furs? Radiohead? They’re in the mix. Layered guitars and well-placed backing vocals add dimension to this spaced-out melodic morsel. The whole thing is refined, precise and expertly executed. I like where this is going.

Where to get it:

Animal Talk @ Atwood’s Tavern 5.7.2015

Thanks to Jed Gottlieb putting together this fine show at Atwood’s, I am reminded that Animal Talk are a ton of fun. It’s not like I forgot about their insanely catchy melodies or undeniable groove. I have the knowledge. Sometimes you just need a little nudge to make it feel more real. Like with “don’t read the comments” or “that milkshake looks delicious but you’re lactose intolerant.” Animal Talk are an excellent band that will make you want to move.

The Sheila Divine @ Harvard Square Mayfair 5.3.2015

Sometimes you hang out in Harvard Square on a beautiful day and watch bands with your 8-year-old son. Sometimes that boy gets tired. Sometimes you strike a deal with him* to hang out for just two songs from one of your favorite bands. Sometimes, as you’re walking to the T with your little buddy after those two songs, he decides he wants to stick around a little longer and you end up getting to watch a good chunk of The Sheila Divine’s set before everyone goes home happy. Sometimes you have really good days.

* Bribe him with pizza.
