Cooling Towers – “Charlotte” (2011)

Cooling Towers
“Charlotte”
2011

Cooling Towers grab you right from the get-go on “Charlotte” with feedback drenched guitars and an undeniable bass line. It’s not long before the drums snap into place and the band launches into a sizzling piece of post punk bliss. It’s aggressive, melodic and it grooves. So good.

Where to get it:

Rule @ Radio 1.20.2012

Growing up we had a cat. When we got him, he was a tiny little kitten. My mom named him Pudge. He pretty quickly grew into his name.

Pretty much the same thing is happening with Rule.*

* Living up to their name, that is. Not getting pudgy.

The Shakes & Pony Show @ Moe’s Lounge 1.20.2012

Thank goodness this is the final night of The Shakes & Pony Show residency at Moe’s Lounge. I’m getting tired of Rod and Jason’s mind games. I’ve been to all three shows and I still can’t figure out what the hell a Shakes & Pony Show is. Sometimes it’s a crazy mix of cover tunes. That was fun. Sometimes it’s Brownboot. That was fun, too. Tonight it’s Rod and Jason playing some ’80s power ballads. That was… oh, I get it now.

Convulsions @ Radio 1.20.2012

The “Born Of Fire” metal series came across the river! They set up shop at Radio and brought Rhode Island’s Convulsions along to get things going. The band had some cool transitions to break up their aural assault.

Apple Betty @ P.A.’s Lounge 1.13.2012

I started the night at Moe’s Lounge/Radio and ended the night catching the last few tunes by garage-poppers Apple Betty at PA’s. I snapped a few pics while the band bopped away. Good times. Thanks Union Square!

Nowhere Lights @ Radio 1.13.2012

Nowhere Lights kick out modern Americana tunes. It’s somehow spacey and twangy at the same time. Neat trick.

Brownboot @ Moe’s Lounge 1.13.2012

So…

It’s night #2 of the Shakes & Pony Show residency at Moe’s Lounge. There’s a band on stage*. I think Shakes is the drummer and Pony is the Nikki Sixx-looking fella playing Gene Dante’s guitar. This night was also billed as Rod, Jason & Friends doing the songs of Brownboot. It sure sounds like Brownboot.** Maybe Rod and Jason’s friends should start a Brownboot tribute band.

Oh, hey! It is Brownboot! There are a couple of new players here, but the songs remain the same. Elena Siegman (vocals) and Randy Knight (bass) join Rod Van Stoli, Jason Baldock, Matt Sullivan and Joe Kowalski in their ’70s rock n’ soul crusade. Someone has to fight the good fight.

* …and floor…

** …or some kind of foot stompin’ acoustic variation there of…

The Daily Pravda – “Moonage Daydream” (2012)

The Daily Pravda
“Moonage Daydream”
2012

The Daily Pravda formed with the hope of “doing to Ziggy Stardust what Oasis did to the Beatles”. Well, gentlemen, mission accomplished. The band recorded this with Dan Gonzales at Esthudio in anticipation of their recent tribute set to the now retirement-aged icon. There’s nothing unexpected here, just a solid send up of a Bowie classic. What more could you want?
