The Tin Thistles @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.3.2012

The Tin Thistles may have been playing up the “token punk band” angle for their set during Preliminary Night #3 of the 2012 Rumble, but there was nothing perfunctory about their performance. These guys came out and gave the TT’s crowd a kick in the pants. It may not have been what everyone wanted, but it was what everyone needed. They just didn’t know it.

Preliminary Night #3 Winner: Ghosts Of Jupiter

The Susan Constant @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.3.2012

Night #3 of the 2012 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble was the only night where I hadn’t seen any of the bands before. The Rumble is a great way to check out new bands. This night would be very fruitful.

The Susan Constant opened the proceedings with a long slow build of a number. It certainly caught my attention. Before long the band was banging out some pretty great indie rock tunes. A friend (who also happens to have won Preliminary Night #1) comments that The Susan Constant walk a line between The Jayhawks and Death Cab For Cutie. It’s an unusual combination – not one I would have thought of – but I get where he’s coming from. It’s a great sound. My friend walked away a big fan. I did too.

Preliminary Night #3 Winner: Ghosts Of Jupiter

Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.2.2012 @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.2.2012

Wow. Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance just blew my mind. I’ve seen these guys before, so I knew they were going to be good. I wasn’t prepared for this. At times it seemed like TT’s would burst. Their Rumble set was so powerful, so joyous, that anything would have been possible. I can’t wait to see them again. I won’t have to wait long. Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance take Preliminary Night #2. They’ll be back for the Semi-Finals next week.

Thick Shakes @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.2.2012

Thick Shakes crammed 11 no-frills garage rock songs into their 30 minute set that kicked off Preliminary Night #2 of the Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble. It was a bashy, trashy, Farfisa-drench fuzzfest and I loved it. Don’t stop – go go go!

Preliminary Night #2 Winner: Garvy J. And The Secret Pockets Of Hope And Resistance

Cooling Towers @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.1.2012

Rumble Preliminary Night #1 closed out with the heavy groove of Cooling Towers. Eric Donohue and Pete Gamache are one killer rhythm section. Ronan Fahy knows when to attack his guitar and when to let it sing. Judy Margo’s backing vocals and synth parts are the icing on the cake – a cake that Commodore Vic slithers all over like some kind of rock n’ roll prophet with a sweet tooth.

Walter Sickert And The Army Of Broken Toys @ Brighton Music Hall 3.16.2012

Walter Sickert and his traveling band of SteamCrunk gypsies make their way to the stage. It has already been an eclectic and memorable evening. Black Thai overpowered us with their thunderous roll. Sidewalk Driver made us a sandwich. Planetoid tried to power their spaceship with our souls and/or melt our faces — which is a better fate than Mary Widow and her seductress companions wished upon us. Now we’re being tipped on end by sights and sounds as varied as the night is long. The Army Of Broken Toys are putting their musical and physical wares on display in an attempt to bring the crowd under their spell. We tumble along, once again avoiding the grasp of Mary Widow as “Ghostbusters” rings through the rafters…

Sidewalk Driver @ Brighton Music Hall 3.16.2012

The morning after Sidewalk Driver’s semi-final set at last year’s Rumble, I described the spectacle that took place to my then-4-year-old son. He listened in astonishment.

The morning after Sidewalk Driver’s recent show at Brighton Music Hall, I told my now-5-year-old boy that Tad made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on stage.* He laughed hysterically.

I’m not sure which reaction made me happier…

* Yes, this is real. It was one of the single greatest moments of my concert going life.

Full Body Anchor @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 3.2.2012

After the last time I caught a Full Body Anchor set, I vowed to go see them more often. That turned out to be one of my better decisions. Their set at the Big Queer Rock Show (a benefit for BAGLY – Boston Alliance for Gay and Lesbian Youth) was awesome. Full Body Anchor shows are intense. I love this band.

Too bad Rice didn’t win the raffle prize he wanted. That would have made things really interesting.

Aquanutz @ Moe’s Lounge 1.20.2012

I pretty much knew I was going to like Aquanutz. I grew up on hair metal, so this was right up my alley. I expected the Poison and Cinderella covers. I would have been happy to leave it at that. I got so much more.

When Aquanutz opened with “Slide It In”, I knew this show was going to exceed my already high expectations. When they covered “Blind In Texas” a couple of songs later I was all-in. I mean, who covers W.A.S.P. in 2012? Awesome bands do. Aquantuz does.

Rule @ Radio 1.20.2012

Growing up we had a cat. When we got him, he was a tiny little kitten. My mom named him Pudge. He pretty quickly grew into his name.

Pretty much the same thing is happening with Rule.*

* Living up to their name, that is. Not getting pudgy.
