Reverse are a force of nature that appreciates both the calm and the storm on The Jersey Switch. While other bands may let their fury go unchecked, Reverse unleash a controlled maelstrom that draws the listener in. Just check out “Permission”; plodding verses lead to a chorus of guitars that explode and drums that pound you into submission. Or witness the loud/quiet/loud of “Ugliest”. Or “Bright” and “Ridiculous,” with guitars that buzz and sing in supersaturated glory. Feedback and noise abound but never threaten to take over the songs. Ian Kennedy’s vocals are often soaring and distorted. Mike Piehl relentlessly smashes away behind the drum kit. The man has power and groove. There is no escape. Reverse owns you now.
Reverse proved they are one of the best bands around with The Jersey Switch. They proved it again (and topped themselves) on 2009’s Monkey Mind. And we haven’t even talked about what a monster live band they are…
Where to get it:
It was a gorgeous day in Cambridge for Make Music Harvard Square. Of the nine or so acts I really would have liked to catch, I managed to see two. Instead of focusing on all of the bands I missed, I will bask in the glory of my boy referring to Goddamn Glenn as “Shiny Pants Guy” when we were talking later about the fun we that afternoon. I’m feeling pretty lucky.
Cn’Fn’L purged their pent-up Bruins anxiety with a raucous set at The Middle East Downstairs opening for Imperial State Electric.
Loud guitars and killer harmonies? Goddamn Draculas have ’em and weren’t afraid to use ’em opening for Imperial State Electric.
Yes! We’ve teamed up with heavyboogiemongers Cult 45 to bring you our first video premiere on Daykamp Music TV! “Dead End Kid” is from On High, which the band released back in January. It puts a clever spin on the ol’ video-inside-a-video trick and tosses in a couple of great cameos. Heck, the beard-no-beard countdown at the beginning is reason enough to click the play button.
The video was done by Mike Gill over at CircumVision, who is also putting together the what-looks-to-be-amazing Billy Ruane documentary.
Enough jabberin’, go watch this thing already! You may even pick up an idea or two for your next video…

OK, let’s get something clear. Not only am I a huge fan of the music we’ve got coming out of Boston, but I’m a junkie for high octane rock ‘n’ roll from Sweden. As soon as I heard about the Imperial State Electric show at The Middle East, I freaked out and frantically snatched up tickets. Not only would I get to see a band I never thought I’d get the chance to see live*, but there were three Boston openers ready to give ’em a run for their money.
White Dynomite got things started on a night that would be full-tilt from start to finish. These guys are too much fun.
* Oh, and they were amazing.
The Upper Crust closed out the Viva La Eva!* benefit with some highfalutin debauchery set to high voltage musical accompaniment. Rocque and Roll indeed…
