It’s been a while since I’ve seen Abbie Barrett And The Last Date — too long for a band this good. Their set at TT’s is making me feel like I’ve been missing something.
Blackbutton burned through an intense set at TT’s.
Three Day Threshold brought their whiskey soaked stomp ‘n’ roll to TT’s.
Have I ever mentioned how great I think Airport’s songs are? Yes, I think I have. My feelings have not changed. They’re still keeping the flame of ’70s AM radio alive. They even did a cover of The Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” to further endear themselves to me.* Well played, Airport.
* That’s why they did it, right? Right?
So, yeah, Aquanutz. I grew up on this stuff*, so I’m predisposed to like it. Hair metal is a thing for me. Plus, you guys/gals are/were in all kinds if sweet bands like Brownboot, The Decals, Gymnasium, Darkbuster, Cocked N’ Loaded, Heavy Stud, The Raging Teens, Noble Rot, Full Body Anchor, The Dents and about a thousand others. You’ve got a lot going for you. Oh, who am I kidding? You have everything going for you. I’m trying not to overplay my hand, but this friggin’ rules. You’re loose when you need to be loose and you’re tight when you need to be tight.** You rock the Whitesnake, White Lion, Poison, Bon Jovi, Lita Ford and Van Halen. I smile. I even tolerate your Scorpions.

* Well, this stuff, Barry Manilow, Anne Murray, Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb, anyway.
** Matt’s solo in “Wait” = tight. Damn. Note perfect. It’s rare that a guitar solo gets a genuine round of mid-song applause these days. This one was well deserved.

I knew nothing of Slowdim before catching their recent set at The Middle East. I left the club that night wanting to hear more, so I hit up their Bandcamp page to check out their musical wares. Wow. “Money” is a chiming indie pop number that immediately won me over. How come I didn’t know about this? Sweet vocal harmonies and singable guitar lines are right up my alley. This song is packed so full of pop goodness it bursts from the speakers with colorful sparks. Looks like I’ve got some more downloading to do.
Where to get it:
Slim Jim And The Mad Cows call what they do “Country Fried Metal Rock.” Makes sense. What else would you call playing classic heavy tunes in the style of the old country legends?* These guys had me grinnin’ from ear to ear.
* Turns out this also could have been called “Maybe My Favorite Thing In The Whole World.”
Pile closed out an Allston Pudding night at O’Brien’s with a punishing set. These guys are impressive.
