Eddie Japan @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 4.26.2013

It’s no secret that Eddie Japan is one of my favorite bands in town. Their run in the 2013 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble showed exactly why that is. Their wasn’t a single moment during any one of their sets in the year’s event where I thought they were anywhere but at their best. From the songs to the showmanship, the folks in Eddie Japan refused to let each other down. This was their night. This was their year. Eddie Japan won the 2013 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble.

Eddie Japan @ Precinct 6.22.2012

It’s pretty remarkable how effortlessly the guys in Eddie Japan can blend musical styles.^* Pop, rock, lounge and spaghetti western motifs are all in play during an Eddie Japan show. Some songs will have you tapping your toes while others will whisk you away to exotic musical locales. What a great way to cap off a heat wave.

^* Or at least how effortless they make it seem.

The dapper gentlemen of Eddie Japan put on a wonderful show last Friday. Their timeless lounge-pop numbers played well against the red-curtained backdrop of Precinct (check out this video of “You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone” for proof). Of course, their timeless lounge-pop numbers play well just about everywhere.

Eddie Japan @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 2.24.2012

Eddie Japan have some pretty great songs. “Pushing Years”, “You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone” and “The Power Of Negative Thinking” are some of the best pop tunes you’ll hear bouncing off of club walls around the city. They played these songs at TT’s last Friday night and made me very happy. Thanks, guys.

Eddie Japan @ Radio 1.28.2012

Eddie Japan is probably my favorite band to feature a trumpet.

I don’t mean that as some kind of backhanded compliment. This is a full-on compliment punch. The trumpet is never an afterthought. It never feels tacked on. Eddie Japan have managed to take a decidedly non-rock instrument and weave it into the very texture of their sound. It doesn’t define their sound, but rather compliments it. It’s not an easy thing to do. Eddie Japan do it well. The whole band is aces and plays to the song. Well done, gentlemen.

Magnum Force @ Radio 12.10.2011

Every MixTape show needs one band to suck it up and play the hits. Don’t re-interpret the songs. Don’t play the songs only the cool kids were into. Take one for the team. It’s MixTape 1988. Someone has to play “Kokomo”. In this case, it’s six somebodies. Six somebodies dressed in Hawaiian shirts, Detroit Tigers hats, short shorts and mustaches. Magnum Force.^*

When I saw Brendan Boogie sporting an honest to goodness mustache early in the evening, he informed me it was part of his costume for the show. I immediately hoped it was a Weekend At Bernie’s reference and that Brendan Boogie would just play dead on stage. I guess my internal movie database^** was off by a year, as that landmark film was released in 1989. I was only mildly disappointed at the Magnum P.I. theme.
