Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble Class of 2013 Initiation

The 2013 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble participants have been announced! Looking down the list, it seems like we’re in for another good one this year. It happens time and time again. Every year 24 different bands remind us what a vibrant music community we have here in Boston. The depth of talent around these parts is astonishing. I saw 273 sets from area bands last year, yet I only managed to catch 11 of the 24 acts that will take the TT’s stage this April to vie for the coveted Rumble Tiara. That’s fantastic.

The nine night pass is available now. The individual show lineups will be announced Sunday night on Boston Emissions. In the meantime, here are some links to help get you familiar with your new favorite bands…

Eddie Japan – Modern Desperation, Part 1 (2012)

Eddie Japan
Modern Desperation, Part 1
2012

Eddie Japan have a new EP out. It’s wonderful. Modern Desperation, Part 1 puts the band’s flair for genre-bending front and center. This stellar release opens with the power pop of “You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone” and “Let Me Bleed,” a pair of songs that showcase the sextet’s ability to write straight-up tunes with the best of ’em. “The Bridges I Have Burned” and “This Married Life” follow, with Eddie Japan layering on the more adventurous colors of their sonic palette. The horns and strings come to the forefront with the insightful lyrics. These guys have an unbelievable collection of textures at their disposal. More impressively, they know exactly when to use each one. Nowhere is this more evident than on the mesmerizing closing track. Infused with drama, intrigue and a spaghetti western arrangement, “A Town Called Nowhere” is as good as it gets. What an exceptional release.

Full Disclosure: The lovely and talented Nicole Anguish of Daykamp Creative did the artwork for this remarkable EP. It looks as good as it sounds.

Where to get it:

Eddie Japan @ Precinct 6.22.2012

It’s pretty remarkable how effortlessly the guys in Eddie Japan can blend musical styles.* Pop, rock, lounge and spaghetti western motifs are all in play during an Eddie Japan show. Some songs will have you tapping your toes while others will whisk you away to exotic musical locales. What a great way to cap off a heat wave.

* Or at least how effortless they make it seem.

Eddie Japan @ Precinct 5.11.2012

The dapper gentlemen of Eddie Japan put on a wonderful show last Friday. Their timeless lounge-pop numbers played well against the red-curtained backdrop of Precinct (check out this video of “You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone” for proof). Of course, their timeless lounge-pop numbers play well just about everywhere.

Eddie Japan @ T.T. The Bear’s Place 2.24.2012

Eddie Japan have some pretty great songs. “Pushing Years”, “You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone” and “The Power Of Negative Thinking” are some of the best pop tunes you’ll hear bouncing off of club walls around the city. They played these songs at TT’s last Friday night and made me very happy. Thanks, guys.

Eddie Japan – “You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone” (2011)

Eddie Japan
“You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone”
2011

Eddie Japan have put together one snappy little pop gem with “You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone”. If this song was a drug (and given the number of times I’ve listened to this one I can safely say it’s addictive*), I would imagine the listed side effects would be toe-tapping and spinning around.** It’s that kind of song: carefree in feeling with a devilish bent to the lyrics. Less moody and exotic than the typical Eddie Japan fare, “You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone” proves that good bands play to the song.

I’m impressed.

Where to get it:

* Using the words “safe” and “addictive” in the same sentence feels weird.

** Or maybe some enthusiastic head bopping.

Eddie Japan @ Radio 1.28.2012

Eddie Japan is probably my favorite band to feature a trumpet.

I don’t mean that as some kind of backhanded compliment. This is a full-on compliment punch. The trumpet is never an afterthought. It never feels tacked on. Eddie Japan have managed to take a decidedly non-rock instrument and weave it into the very texture of their sound. It doesn’t define their sound, but rather compliments it. It’s not an easy thing to do. Eddie Japan do it well. The whole band is aces and plays to the song. Well done, gentlemen.

Eddie Japan @ Radio 11.12.2011

Eddie Japan brought their horn-tinged moody pop to the Radio stage.
