The Field Effect @ Brighton Music Hall 12.14.2012

Friday night was a big one at Brighton Music Hall. Boston Band Crush presented their final show. Richard Bouchard put together one heck of a bill for the Boston Band Crush Holiday Spectacular. After a compelling opening set by Emily Peal And The Band Of Skinny Men, The Field Effect took the stage to release their new CD, Cartography. The band tore through a bunch of tunes from that record before busting out their Wham! cover.

Oh, one more thing. The Field Effect took the stage in holiday sweaters.* I feel like I should warn you about that before you look at the pictures.

* Which they quickly shed due to the warmth of the stage lights. At least that’s the excuse they’ll use.

The Field Effect @ Radio 11.16.2012

We should all be lucky enough to approach one aspect of our lives with as much enthusiasm as The Field Effect have for playing their songs* for people.

* And the occasional Weezer cover. They reprised “My Name Is Jonas” from their Halloween set for this show.

The Field Effect as Weezer @ Church 10.27.2012

Here are some pictures of one of my favorite live bands covering a band I used to love but disowned after they put out a record so bad it ruined my perception of the band forever. Or so I thought.

You see, Weezer and I were estranged. After Make Believe came out, I stopped listening to them altogether. I had such a distaste for that album that I couldn’t even bring myself to listen to Pinkerton. Everything seemed off. Then The Field Effect came along and reminded me how much I love some of those old Weezer tunes. I was hearing them through someone else’s ears. Sometimes you need a little distance from a bad breakup to appreciate what you had and move on.

A few days later my six year old grabbed The Blue Album off the shelf and asked me what band it was. I told him. We listened. We both liked it.

The Field Effect @ Radio 10.13.2012

By the time The Field Effect took the stage at Radio for the club’s big anniversary show, the wheels had already come off the bus. Back-to-back sets by Mellow Bravo and OldJack had seen to that.* The Field Effect took the if-you-can’t-beat-’em-join-’em mentality and delivered a rousing set that kept the crowd wrapped up in the revelry.

* Not to mention the nine acts that played before them…

Grandfather Time Bomb @ The Middle East Downstairs 9.8.2012

The last of the year’s new crop of one night bands was Grandfather Time Bomb. Annie Hoffman, Caroline Toth, Evelyn Pope, Jared Egan and Walter Sickert formed a group with a sinister undercurrent. It was a flash of dark rock on a bright night for Boston rock. One Night Band 4 birthed eight new bands, raised more than $3000 for good causes* and still had one more surprise to come…
