The Lights Out aren’t afraid to take chances. This is a band that covered Queen this past Halloween and did “Bohemian Rhapsody” in its entirety. Stripping back their usual big rock aesthetic into a compelling semi-acoustic set probably seemed like a walk in the park after that. Good stuff at Radio last Friday…

I do so enjoy the music of Dave Mirabella. He can do a full on rock show with The Rationales or play solo with his acoustic guitar and I will be happy. This past Friday night at Radio was the latter. I had missed a chance to see him play earlier in the week. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake again.

Thick Shakes are out on a short tour right now, but before they left they shimmied out a new single. “Polyommatus Blues” can’t decide if it should smolder with restraint or cut loose like it’s got sparklers in its pants. It does both. Throw a quick organ solo in the middle and you’ve got another in a long line of classic Thick Shakes over-modulated garage rock nuggets. Snag it while they’re on the road and get it name-your-price style.
Oh, and they’re shooting a video for this tune? Daykamp Music TV just got twitchy…

The Luxury do majestic indie rock in a big way. Their set at TT’s featured some new faces and new tunes, but the sound was was as grand as ever.

Richard Bouchard has been putting together some pretty great shows over at TT’s lately. This particular Thursday night kicked off with Parlour Bells filling the club with charisma, wit and moody pop tunes. Their tactful mix of songs and showmanship never gets old.

I had only seen The Shills a couple of times before seeing them open for Spacehog. My band squared off against them in the 2008 Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble prelims. Neither of us advanced. I saw them again a couple of years later at a Rock n Romp event. The kids and I enjoyed them. It had been 3 years since our paths last crossed. You’ll forgive me if I wasn’t prepared for what I saw at Great Scott. These guys are playing in a whole new league now. The Shills are impressive.
